Measuring Tire Tread
To check the depth of a tire tread, you will need a penny or quarter. Place the penny in the tire's tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If Lincoln's entire head is visible, your tread depth is less than 2/32 and it's time for new tires.Â
You can also measure tire tread depth using the treadwear indicator bar that's manufactured into your tires. When these bars become visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, the tire has no more than 2/32 inch of tread remaining, indicating it's time for new tires.Â
Signs It's Time for an Alignment
When should you get a tire alignment? If you've noticed uneven tread wear, your vehicle is pulling to one side, the steering wheel is off center when driving straight or if you can feel the steering wheel vibrate and shake when driving, it's time for an alignment.Â
When in doubt, you should have a technician check your alignment. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Ignoring signs of a needed alignment can cost you in the end.Â
Tire BalanceÂ
Having properly balanced tires is key to long-lasting tires, good gas mileage and proper vehicle wear. Having tires aligned and balanced every 5,000 to 6,000 miles can help maximize their lifespan and overall performance.
